LCC Mallee Study Area (1972-1977)
Progress
Overview
Notices showing the boundary of the study area and advising that an investigation was to be carried out were published in the Victoria Government Gazette, and in local and Victorian newspapers in May 1972. A descriptive report was published in September 1974. Following publication of the report, the Council received 368 submissions on the future use of public land from individuals, associations, companies, and local and State government bodies. After considering these submissions and visiting the study area, the Council prepared its proposed recommendations, and these were published in April 1976. The Council received 582 submissions commenting on the proposals. The final recommendations were published in May 1977.
The LCC’s largest study area, the Mallee contained huge areas of public land in the Big Desert and Sunset Country, as well as significant red gum forests along the Murray River. Relatively modest areas of parks were recommended, with much of the remaining land being ‘uncommitted’. The investigation also saw the LCC’s only substantial recommendations for alienation of public land, with more than 105,000 hectares recommended either for alienation for agriculture or leased for cropping and grazing.
The descriptive report, proposed recommendations and final recommendations are available from this page.
The final recommendations were superseded by the Mallee Area Review (1985-1989).
