Overview

Notices showing the boundary of the study area and advising that an investigation was to be carried out were published in the Victoria Government Gazette and in local and other Victorian newspapers in February and March 1974. A descriptive report was published in September 1976. The Council received 178 submissions on the future use of public land from individuals, associations, companies, and local and State government bodies.  After considering the submissions, and having visited the area, the Council formulated its proposed recommendations, which were published in September 1977. The Council received 220 submissions commenting on those proposals. The Council published its final recommendations in September 1978.

Relatively little of this region (15%) remained in public ownership, with most land already alienated and cleared. Almost all the natural vegetation is concentrated on public land in the south east of the study area on and around the Otway Ranges, where it varies from low heathland to tall mountain forests.

The descriptive report, proposed recommendations and final recommendations are available from this page.

Government decisions on the final recommendations can be found on this website here.

All of the Corangamite area was included in the Historic Places South-Western Victoria Special Investigation (1995-1997). Most of the eastern part of the study area was included in the Angahook-Lorne then Angahook-Otway Investigation (2002-2004)
